Causes of Herniated Disks
Herniated disc causes are as varied as the symptoms they produce. However, there are a few common factors that lead to the majority of cases.
These main herniated disc causes include:
- Disc degeneration – As we age, the spinal discs in our back lose water and become more brittle, making them more susceptible to rupturing.
- Sports – Rough sports, like football as well as those that require repetitive movement and stress on the back, can put excess pressure on spinal discs, wearing them down and causing them to rupture. The herniation can also be caused by a sudden impact, such as from a football tackle.
- Car accidents and other trauma – Spinal discs serve as cushions between vertebrae to keep them from rubbing against one another as they move and withstand pressure. However, abrupt pressure from external forces, like what might be sustained in a car accident, can put such a burden on the disc that it bursts.
- Wear and tear – Over time, wear and tear from normal activities can become so severe that the outer wall of a spinal disc can no longer contain the interior, and it ruptures.
