Herniated Disk in Neck
The most commonly diagnosed and treated condition related to the cervical spine is a herniated disk in neck. The most common age bracket to be affected by a herniated disk in the neck is between thirty and fifty years old. This is because as we age our spinal disks will natural degenerate and become more susceptible to disk herniation. Common symptoms such as arm pain will usually start without any indication of injury to any area.
How does a herniated disk in neck cause pain
When the material that bulges from a herniated disk applies pressure to a cervical nerve the pain will be felt in the location that that nerve is responsible for. Cervical nerves follow pathways through the shoulder, down the arms and into the hands. With this in mind, a cervical herniated disk may cause pain or numbness to be felt in the shoulder, arms, or in the hands.
The most common place for a spine specialist to diagnose a herniated disk in neck is at the C5 - C6 level of the spine. A herniated disk in the neck is very rarely found at the C7 - T1 level. When identifying the disks of the spine a letter and numerical placement is assigned. In the cervical spine a C along with a number is used to indicate it is a cervical disk.
Herniated disk in neck symptoms
As a general rule of thumb (although not all human anatomies follow these rules) pain and neurological effects can be easily predicted if we know which nerve is affected. The reverse could be said and make diagnosis of a herniated disk in the neck fairly simple.
C4 - C5 herniated disk affecting the C5 nerve root - When affected by a herniated disk in neck, the deltoid muscle is commonly weakened. Numbness and tingling is not a common symptom of a C5 nerve root compression.
C5 - C6 herniated disk affecting the C6 nerve root - Weakness is felt in the bicep and wrist extensor muscle. Common symptoms for C6 nerve root compression include numbness, tingling and pain that radiates into the thumb side of the patient’s hand.
C6 - C7 herniated disk affecting the C7 nerve root - Weakness can be felt in the triceps and muscles in the fingers. Common symptoms will generally include numbness and tingling combined with pain felt in the middle finger.
C7 - T1 herniated disk affecting the C8 nerve root- The effect of a herniated disk in this area of the neck can be very disabling. Fortunately this is the most uncommon place to have a herniated disk in neck. Common symptoms of nerve compression in this area include weakened hand grip, numbness, tingling and radiating pain that is felt into the outer portion of the hand.
