Herniated Disk Treatments Resources

Resources

  • Spinal Decompression
If its done properly, spinal decompression can help many people who suffer from back pain.
  •
  • Avoid Back Pain
Simple ways that you can increase the chances of having a healthier back and avoid back pain.
  •
  • Lower Back Pain
Information about back conditions that can plague and cause lower back pain. Find out how diagnose and treat your back pain.
  •
  • Painful Back Conditions
Painful back conditions that often slowly develop over time.
  •
  • Sciatica Information
Information about the sciatic nerve and the condition sciatica, which is the impingement of this nerve causing symptoms of radiating pain in the buttocks and legs.
  •

    Treatments

  • Foraminotomy
A foraminotomy is performed to relieve the symptoms of nerve root compression in cases where the foramen is being compressed by bone, disc, scar tissue, or excessive ligament development and results in a pinched nerve.
  •
  • Laminotomy
A laminotomy is also a procedure used to remove the ligamentum flavum, a ligament in the spinal canal that can thicken to the point where it is actually compressing on the spinal cord, attributing to spinal stenosis.
  •
  • Facet Thermal Ablation
The surgeon uses a laser to clean the facet joint and deaden the nerve that innervates the joint and causes painful symptoms. The facet joints are the joint structures that connect the vertebrae to one another. Thermal ablation refers to the laser eradication of the effected nerve.
  •
  • Percutaneous Endoscopic Discectomy
A Percutaneous Endoscopic Discectomy is used to treat degenerative disc disease, a herniated disc, bulging disc, pinched nerve (nerve root compression) or sciatica
  •
  • Spinal Fusion Alternative
This can cause new herniated discs, bone spurs, foraminal narrowing and spinal stenosis. Fusions cannot be reversed, either, and some patients who have them may experience a lifetime of spine problems and surgeries.
  •

    Symptoms

  • Back Pain
Back pain can be felt as a symptom to a herniated disc when the disc herniation push against nerves that send signals to the muscles in the back.
  •
  • Tingling
This is another symptom of a herniated disk related to nerve impingement and the reduction of blood flow to the affected area.
  •
  • Weakness
When a herniated disk impinges on a nerve and the flow of oxygen and nutrients is constricted, muscular weakness will often be felt.
  •
  • Radiating Pain
When a herniated disk affects the sciatic nerve, waves of pain that radiate down into the lower limbs are often felt.
  •
  • Numbness
Depending on the location of the herniated disk, numbness may be felt in the extremity related to that section of the spine.
  •

    Causes

  • Wear and Tear
With repetitive stress and strain being applied to our spinal disc over the span of our life they become more susceptible to disk herniation.
  •
  • Traumatic Injury
In cases of traumatic injury to the cervical section of the spine (often caused by whiplash in a collision), the end result is often a herniated cervical disk.
  •
  • Age
As spinal disc start to degenerate due to aging, the chances of a disk herniation increases.
